The District 4 First 5 group met September 15 at Knob Noster Middle School. We had a great turnout, with 10 teachers attending. Leesha Dunkeson hosted us, and demonstrated a new lithography product as well as other great printmaking projects. Our next meeting will be Thursday, November 17 at the Art Building at UCM in Warrensburg.

Ivan Ramirez, teacher at Pettis County R-XII in Dresden, began his first Art Club project, a mural outside his school. He also took his 3^rd-5^th graders to the Daum Escape in Sedalia.

Janice Hargrave, first-year teacher in Sedalia, reports that she is really enjoying the artwork her students are producing!

I’ve worked this fall to identify all of the art teachers in my district, and will begin to target new teachers for the First 5 group, as well as encourage other teachers to join MAEA.

Spring News 2011

Ivan Ramirez, teacher at Pettis County R-XII in Dresden, hosted a month of activities for Youth Art Month in March. Events included art quotes read by students, spirit days, a door decorating contest, cards for nursing homes, a field trip, and a mural pen pal with a Scottish school. He is also taking students to the Nelson-Atkins on May 4.

Local spring art contests:
• Conference Art Contest for students of Janice Jannuzzi-Thomas in Lincoln was held at State Fair Community College. Students who received a 1st place will go on to a national contest.
• Pettis County R-XII in Dresden will hold their art show on April 29.
• Crest Ridge High School will hold its annual middle school/high school art show on May 10.
• The UCM Department of Art & Design will hold its annual High School Art Contest on Thursday, April 7, with works from high school students shown from March 29-April 7.

Our third First 5 meeting for teachers in their first 5 years of teaching art is scheduled for Thursday, February 17, 5 p.m. at the classroom of Ivan Ramirez, art teacher at Pettis County R-XII, Dresden, MO. The school is just west of Sedalia, at 22675 Depot Rd., Sedalia, MO.

All teachers in District 4 in their first 5 years of teaching are invited. Please bring a lesson to share, and bring a friend! Snacks will be provided.

Summer News

Leesha Dunkeson, Knob Noster Middle School, was honored at the NAEA National Convention in Baltimore for winning National Middle School Art Teacher of the Year. A good number of MAEA members came out to support Leesha at the reception, struggling through hunger and broken arms to get there. Congratulations, Leesha, we’re proud of you!

Congratulations to Janice Januzzi-Thomas for receiving honors as the MAEA K-12 Art Teacher of the Year!

Thanks to all teachers from District 4 who participated in Youth Art Month and Missouri Fine Arts Day this March.

District 4 Shoe Party!

Looking for something to do on Sundays now that football season is over? Join us for a shoe-decorating party! The shoes will be used as table decorations for the Spring Conference March 4-6.

The details: Sunday, February 21, 2-4 p.m., Department of Art & Design, Art Center 111, University of Central Missouri, Warrensburg (214 E. Clark St.). Please let me know if you plan to attend.

I will provide snacks and paints/brushes, and I have some shoes. Bring any clean, used shoes that you are willing to donate.

If you’d like to participate but can’t come to the party, please contact me (weed@ucmo.edu) and let me know how many shoes I can count on. Maybe your students could even help out (art club, a class etc.)!

To make the shoes: Wash your used shoes in the washing machine (they will be on the table, after all!) and allow to dry fully. Prime with gesso or flat white latex. Then, decorate! Some ideas include in the style of an artist, a new creation, assemblage sculpture, creatures, shoe-bots. Have fun! That's right, if you've thought about sending work to Youth Art Month but never get around to it, or if you always send work, this is a chance to get together with other teachers in District 4 to prepare your work together!

District 4 VST workshop

SAVE THE DATE!

Vicki Weaver has set up a Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS) workshop for us at the Daum Museum in Sedalia. The workshop will be held on Saturday, December 12, from 10 a.m. to approximately 3 p.m. Please bring money for lunch on your own. We will see a DVD of Philip Yenawine facilitating the VTS process, we will be given handouts to take home, and everyone will be able to practice facilitation in the galleries.

Please RSVP by Wednesday, Dec. 9 to me (weed@ucmo.edu or 660-543-4289), so that we can have a good idea of how many to expect. We welcome new members, student members, and members from area districts, as well.

Great to see all of you at the chilly Fall Conference! I attended the Summer Council Meeting in Kansas City, and can’t wait until our Spring Conference there! Put it on your calendars now for March 4-6, 2010. Remember you can now pay for conference registration online using Paypal, through the web site. I have begun a District 4 MAEA group for any of you on Facebook. Just search for us in groups.
Member Cindy Engle recommended the book Arts with the Brain in Mind by Eric Jensen as an advocacy tool. Thanks, Cindy!

Congratulations, Lynn Wilson!

Lenore (Lynn) Wilson, the elementary Art teacher K-6 at Morgan County R1 in Stover, was voted "Teacher of the Year" this year at her school. In addition, she was also nominated for the "2009 MSTA Central Region Teacher's Association's Outstanding Elementary Educator" award. There was a surprise assembly in her honor at her school as she won this award over some 80 other schools (the award usually goes to a classroom teacher).

Spring News

District 4 members were invited to Knob Noster Middle School in January for a YAM preparation party. Thanks to Leesha Dunkeson for hosting the event! We had five people attend this year, but are hoping for even more next year, and plan to make it an annual event! Congratulations to District 4 teachers Bob Brock, Beth Collum, Cindy Engle, Janice Jannuzi-Thomas, Leesha Dunkeson, Marla Rohrbach, Lenore Wilson, Marla Stretz, Helen Sanders, Lori Jobe, Craig Halloran, and Sarah Willard, whose students’ work was exhibited in the YAM Capitol Exhibit.
A special congratulations to Sarah Willard and Leesha Dunkeson, whose students’ work was chosen for the President’s Choice award, in the upper elementary and middle school categories respectively.
Appproximately 400 students from 30 schools attended UCM’s Department of Art & Design High School Art Contest on Thursday, April 2. A juried exhibition in conjunction with the contest day included 156 artworks from 22 different area schools.
State Fair Community College will host its annual Art Symposium for area High School students on April 23.

Crest Ridge High School is hosting a Spring Art Contest on Friday, April 17, for Jr. High (7 & 8) and High School students in IA and IIA schools. If you are interested in participating, contact Janet Bryan at jbryan@crs.k12.mo.us Entries will be accepted April 14-16 until 5 pm, or by arrangement.

In Remembrance

On a somber note, we lost a dear friend in District 4 this summer. Vicki Pennell, a former MAEA Art Teacher of the Year who retired from Odessa High School after 25 years, passed away in July. Vicki was most recently teaching at the University of Central Missouri. She was a wonderful teacher and advocate for the arts who touched many lives, and she will be greatly missed. Please keep her children, Hillary and Jeremy, in your thoughts. Memorials can be sent to the Department of Art and Design, UCM.

Hello to all of you in District 4!

I enjoyed the great turnout we had of District 4 members at Knob last weekend. I had a great time, but caught the flu right afterward, so I've been catching up. My son started Kindergarten this year, so I get all those lovely school bugs this year!

Here's some of the news from the District:

Lone Jack Primary is holding an Art Fair on November 13th. Contact Lisa Kirk.

The Kaysinger Conference, which includes the schools of Cole Camp, Lamonte, Lincoln, Northwest, Sacred Heart, Smithton, and Stover, has been nominated for a Missouri Arts Council Missouri Art Award. Congratulations and best of luck!

Our first attempt at communicating this way wasn't so successful, but I think it will catch on. We'll give it another try!

I'm getting ready to go to the Fall Conference at Knob Noster State Park later today, and it looks like a beautiful weekend and an awesome conference. I'll write more later this weekend after the fun is over.

During this historic election season, I'd like to encourage you to take the time to find out about the candidate's platforms on education. There will be a live stream debate by an advisor for each of the presidential candidates specifically on the topic of education, on Oct. 21 at 7 pm. Youth Art Month 2007

The Youth Art Month (YAM) Exhibit information for 2007 is now online! Entry requirements and procedures are now online at the MAEA website, http://www.maea.net/ Click on the YAM button, then scroll down to select the 2007 online version.

Since 1961, March has been designated as Youth Art Month. Continue the tradition and participate in the Missouri Art Education Association Youth Art Month State Capitol Exhibit and Missouri Alliance for Arts Education Fine Arts Education Day.

Deadline for art work submission: February 1, 2007

Exhibit dates: March 3-10, 2007, 3rd floor of Capitol Rotunda, Senate side

As your District Rep, I've been trying to figure out the best way for us all to communicate with each other and share ideas, and I think this will work great! My idea is for this page to be a forum for District 4 to share ideas, much like a "Drag and Brag", only online. You'll be able to attach photos of lessons, lesson plans to share, and general interest items. I'm not intending to "blog" every day, but instead we'll update it as necessary. Enjoy!
